What goes into a new foundation in Shafter?
Foundation installation in Shafter means building the concrete base your house or building sits on, usually a slab poured on the ground or a crawl space that holds the floor up off it, and the type you pick decides how the place handles moisture and uneven ground.
Most people who call about a foundation have a lot, a set of plans or a builder, and one big question about what goes under the house. The price moves with the size of the footprint, the type you choose, how much digging the slope takes and how much steel the plans call for, while the schedule turns mostly on the permit and inspections, then on the weather around the pour. We're based in Shafter and work across Shafter, Bakersfield and the cities around them, and if your job needs a permit, we handle the application and line up the inspections. If your plans call for a plain flat slab, our slab foundation building work covers that, and your written estimate spells out what's included for your job.
How do you know what your lot needs before you build?
The lot slopes
If the ground falls off toward one side, that slope has to be settled before anything else gets decided. Build as if it's flat and you usually end up hauling in a lot of fill or living with a damp low corner.
Water sits after rain
Puddles that hang around where the house will go mean water is running toward that spot, not away from it. Pour there without fixing the grade and that water tends to end up under your floor.
An addition on the drawings
A new room or a separate unit needs its own foundation, set to match the floor height of what's already there. Get that wrong and you get a step or a crack where the old and new meet.
How we handle foundation installation, from the dirt up
Slab or crawl space comes down to how the lot slopes and how much moisture worries you, so I walk the lot with you before we pick. Then we stake out the footprint, dig out the loose topsoil and pack the subgrade, the dirt the whole thing sits on, in layers until it stops moving. We set forms, tie in rebar, the steel that keeps cracks tight and the concrete in one piece, and check where water runs so it heads away from the house instead of under it. We pour early in the day, because concrete that bakes in the afternoon heat ends up with a weak, dusty top, then cut control joints, shallow lines that give the slab a place to crack where we choose, and let it cure, the slow stretch where it hardens to full strength. When a budget gets tight, people want to trim the base work nobody will ever see. I won't, because the base is the one part you can't fix later without breaking out the concrete.
Most foundations start with concrete footings, the wider strips of concrete under the walls that spread the weight out, and on a crawl space they're most of the job. If the building is a shop or a small commercial space, our crew can pour the concrete parking lot once it's up.
Slab on grade
A slab poured right on the packed ground suits a flat lot and a house where you want the floor close to the yard. There's nothing to crawl under, so the plumbing gets laid out before the pour.
Crawl space
Footings and short walls hold the floor up off the ground, which works on a lot that slopes. It also leaves room under the house to reach pipes and wiring later.
Addition or second building
A new room or a separate unit gets a foundation matched to the floor height of what's already there. We set it up to suit your plans, whether it joins the house or stands on its own.

What happens after you call us about a foundation in Shafter?
Here's how a foundation job runs on your end, from the first call to the walk-through, including the permit and the city inspections that shape part of the schedule.
Call or send the form
Call (661) 776-8737 or use the form and tell us where the lot is and what you're building. We'll set a time for me to come out.
Walk the lot together
I measure, ask how you'll use the building and walk the lot with you to settle on slab or crawl space. You get a written estimate that says what's included, and we sort out any permit before anybody digs.
Build, inspect, walk through
Our crew does the work with me on site, and since Shafter books residential inspections in a morning or afternoon window that busy days can push back, we leave room in the schedule around them. When we're done, I walk it with you.
Why Shafter homeowners and builders call Shafter Concrete for foundations
I write every estimate myself
I come out to look at every job and write the estimate on site, and our own crew does the work with me there. The person who walked your lot is the one standing on it when we pour.
In business since 2013
I started as a helper on a small crew and opened this business in 2013, and builders around Shafter call us for slabs and footings. That's 13 years of learning what goes wrong under concrete.
Licensed and insured on foundations
We're licensed and insured. That matters on a foundation, because the job runs through permits and inspections and you want the people doing it covered.

Foundation and footing work in Shafter and nearby cities
Shafter's Building Department issues the permits, and the city requires one to build, enlarge, alter, repair, move or demolish a building or structure, so a new foundation goes through the city before we dig. The application goes in with the plans and drawings, and on top of the city's own inspections, the state building code calls for certain materials and connections to be checked by a certified special inspector, which in Shafter means one the city has approved. We handle the application and book those inspections around the pour, and if it isn't clear what your job needs, we check with the building office for your address before we start.
Around here, a lot that looks flat often still sheds water toward where the house will sit, so I check the fall of the ground before we set a single form. Summer pours start early, before the heat gets to the concrete. We work the same way on jobs in Bakersfield and Wasco.
Questions about foundation installation in Shafter
Call (661) 776-8737What is the best way to choose between a slab and a crawl space foundation?
Start with how your lot slopes and how much moisture worries you. A slab handles moisture well but isn't a good fit for graded land, while a crawl space works on uneven ground but is prone to moisture problems underneath. I walk the lot with you before we pick, so the choice fits the ground you've actually got.
How much does a new foundation cost in Shafter?
There's no flat price, because every lot and set of plans is different. A crawl space usually takes more forming and wall work than a slab on flat ground, and a sloped lot adds digging, fill or taller walls, so those two things move the number most. I'll price yours after I've walked the lot.
Will my new concrete foundation crack?
Some cracking is normal, even when the work is done right. A completely crack-free slab isn't a realistic thing to expect, even with a sound design and careful work, which is why we cut those control joints to give it a place to go. I'd rather you hear that from me now than find it on your own later.
Can I get my own building permit for a foundation in Shafter?
Yes, the city lets homeowners get a permit for work on their own home and draw up their own plans. The catch is that those plans have to meet every code that applies, and making sure they do is on you. If you'd rather not carry that, we handle the application for you.
Who can legally pour a house foundation in California?
A contractor with California's concrete classification can, since the state license board sets that class for people who form, pour, place, finish and install concrete. A general building contractor can take the job too if it holds that classification or hands the concrete to a licensed specialty contractor. The unlicensed exception only covers jobs up to $1,000 that need no permit and no hired help, so it won't cover a foundation.
How long does foundation installation take in Shafter?
Longer than the pour itself, because the permit and the inspections set most of the schedule. After the pour, the concrete still needs time to cure before it carries any framing. I'll talk through the timing for your job when I come out.
