Why Shafter homeowners and builders call us

Most bad concrete I've seen went wrong below the surface, not on top. These are the four habits we keep so yours doesn't end up in that pile.

  • The estimator is at the pour

I look at every job and write the estimate myself, and I'm on site with our crew when it's poured, so the person who quoted your concrete is there to see it done.

  • Ground first, concrete second

We dig out soft dirt and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, because that's where most sunken concrete starts. If the budget's tight, I'd trim the fancy finish before the base.

  • Estimates you can compare

Our written estimates spell out what's in and what isn't, from base work and haul-off to the finish, so you can line them up against anybody else's quote item by item.

  • Cracks along lines we choose

Concrete shrinks as it dries, so we cut control joints, straight grooves that give it a place to crack, on time and where we want them instead of letting the slab pick.

Concrete work we do in Shafter, CA

Shafter Concrete is a concrete contractor in Shafter, CA that homeowners call for driveways, patios and walks, and builders call for slabs and footings. Across our 16 services we're mostly fixing the same few problems, slabs that sink, crack where nobody planned or send water toward the house, and building new ones on ground that's ready for them. The price moves with the size, how much old concrete and dirt comes out, how thick the slab has to be and the finish you want. The schedule turns on any permit and on curing, the wait while new concrete hardens before it takes weight. Your own number comes with the on-site estimate.

  • Broad concrete driveway in front of a blue-gray house with two wooden garage doors and a small lawn.

    Concrete driveway building

We build new concrete driveways for homes, from the dug-out and packed base to the final finish, sized for the cars and trucks you actually park.

  • Stone-pattern concrete patio beside a brick house, furnished with two bright turquoise chairs.

    Concrete patio construction

Want a spot for the grill and chairs? We pour backyard patios that fall away from the house, so water runs off instead of pooling.

  • Stamped concrete patio with a tan patterned surface and dark contrasting border, surrounded by outdoor furniture.

    Stamped concrete services

Stamped concrete is pressed with patterns and colored to look like stone, brick or tile, for patios, walks and pool decks where plain gray feels too plain.

  • Curved concrete sidewalk sweeps across a lawn toward a large white house.

    Concrete sidewalk building

We build walks to the front door, side yard or street, flat and even so nobody catches a toe, with a texture that grips when wet.

  • Three wide light-colored concrete steps lead to a tiled porch and black front door on a white-sided house.

    Garage floor concrete

Cracked, sunken or chipping garage floor? We break out the old slab, rebuild the base under it and pour a new floor that takes a car's weight.

  • A dark exposed-aggregate concrete walkway and steps lead to the front door of a brick house.

    Decorative concrete

Decorative concrete covers color, exposed stone, scored lines and custom borders, for homeowners and businesses who want the surface to look like it was planned.

  • Large patterned concrete patio bordered by low stone retaining walls beside a house, with a circular built-in feature at one end.

    Concrete retaining walls

When a slope keeps washing into the yard, we build concrete retaining walls on proper footings to hold the soil back and give you level ground.

  • Decorative stamped concrete driveway with an irregular stone pattern leading to a stone garage beneath a metal roof.

    Concrete floor installation

We pour interior concrete floors for shops, additions, barns and commercial spaces, finished smooth and flat enough for the work that happens on them.

  • Concrete pool deck with lounge chairs beside a swimming pool and a multilevel stone-and-wood house.

    Concrete pool decks

What makes a good pool deck? One that drains away from the water and has a finish that grips bare wet feet, which is what we build.

  • A gray stamped-concrete patio with a covered seating area connects to broad concrete steps and a walkway.

    Concrete steps construction

We build concrete steps for front porches, back doors and slopes, with every step the same height so nobody trips on the odd one.

  • Stamped concrete driveway with gray panels and dark textured bands leading to a small house surrounded by trees.

    Slab foundation building

We pour the slab a new house, garage or addition sits on, with the ground packed and steel rebar tied in so the slab holds together.

  • Dark gray stamped concrete driveway fills the space between buildings, with a rectangular block pattern and utility meters along the wall.

    Foundation installation

Starting a build? We lay out, dig and pour foundations for homes, additions and commercial buildings, checked for level and square before the framers show up.

  • Large light concrete driveway slabs form a geometric grid separated by strips of green grass beside a modern white house.

    Concrete parking lot building

We build concrete parking lots for businesses, churches and apartment buildings, graded so water drains off and thick enough to take delivery trucks.

  • New concrete sidewalk leads across a lawn toward a brick house, bordered by yellow caution tape.

    Concrete footings

Footings are the concrete under a wall, post or foundation that spreads its weight into the ground. We dig and pour them for builders and homeowners.

  • Stamped concrete patio with tan and gray geometric patterns sits beneath a black-framed screen enclosure beside a pond.

    Foundation raising

When a slab or foundation has sunk and doors start sticking, we lift it back toward level and deal with the soil that let it drop.

  • New gray concrete patio and walkway extend from broad brick steps, with large square joints and landscaped beds.

    Concrete cutting

Need a doorway, trench for a pipe or bad section taken out? We saw-cut concrete with clean, straight edges so the rest of the slab stays put.

How a job goes, from call to walkthrough

You call or send the form, and we reply within one business day. Here's what happens from there, and who you'll see at each step.

  1. Call or send the form

Call (661) 776-8737 or use the contact form and tell us roughly what you're after, whether that's a new driveway, a patio or a slab for a build. We reply within one business day and set a time for me to come look. Nobody shows up with a contract in hand.

  2. Estimate on site

I come out, measure and ask how you'll use the concrete, because a patio for chairs and a pad for an RV aren't built the same. Then you get a free written estimate that says what's included and what isn't. There's no obligation, so take your time comparing.

  3. The pour

Our own crew digs out, packs the base, sets forms and pours, and I'm on site with them. If your job needs a permit, we've already handled the application and lined up the inspections before anybody digs, so you aren't the one stuck at the counter.

  4. Walkthrough

When we're done, I walk the finished job with you, show you where the joints are and tell you when it's ready for feet and when it's ready for tires. We haul off the old concrete and leave the site swept, so the only sign we were there is the slab.

About us

Shafter, the city we're based in

Shafter is our home city, and a lot of the people we pour for here know it as well as we do. The Shafter Depot Museum keeps railroad, farming and local history under one roof, and at Minter Field Air Museum you can walk through the history of Minter Army Air Field and Kern County aviation.

The Green Hotel stands at James Street and Central Avenue, and the Shafter Chamber of Commerce keeps a page on the city's museums if you've got visitors to keep busy. Around town our calls are mostly the everyday kind, like driveways that have settled at the garage, backyard patios and slabs for new builds, and since we're based here, I'm the one who comes out to look.

Questions about concrete work in Shafter

Call (661) 776-8737
How much does a new concrete driveway cost in Shafter?

The price for your driveway comes down to its size, how much old concrete has to be broken out and hauled off, the base work underneath and the finish you choose. A tight spot the truck can't reach costs more than an open front yard, because the concrete has to come in by wheelbarrow or pump. I'll measure and give you the number in a free written estimate.

Why are concrete quotes so different from each other?

Usually because they don't include the same work, and the base is the first thing a low quote leaves thin. Packing the ground under a slab takes time and doesn't show on day one, but it's where most sunken concrete starts. That's why our estimates list what's in and what isn't.

How long until I can use my new driveway or patio?

You can walk on new concrete well before you can drive on it, and I'll tell you the timing for your slab at the walkthrough. That wait is the curing, and rushing it leaves a weaker top that chips and dusts later. If the job needs a permit, the city of Shafter asks you to allow one to five business days for residential permit processing, so that comes before we dig.

Does a concrete contractor in California need a license?

In California, anyone who contracts for work that needs a building permit, uses employees, or is worth $1,000 or more in combined labor and materials must hold a current license from the Contractors State License Board. We're licensed and insured, so ask any contractor you're comparing the same question.

Do you handle the permit for my concrete job in Shafter?

Yes, if your job needs a permit we handle the application and line up the inspections, and if it's unclear, we check with the building office for your address before we start. Inside Shafter city limits, the city's Building Department lists patios and retaining walls among the work that needs one.

Do you guarantee your concrete work?

Our promise is satisfaction guaranteed, and I'm on site for the work, so if something isn't right at the walkthrough you're telling the person who poured it. Concrete can still crack, which is why we put the time into the base and the control joints.

What's the difference between a broom finish and stamped concrete?

A broom finish is a plain surface dragged with a broom so it grips shoes and tires when it's wet, while stamped concrete is pressed and colored to look like stone, brick or tile. Broom finish costs less and is the usual pick for driveways and walks. Stamped costs more and suits patios and pool decks, and both need the same prep underneath.

How do I know if my address is inside Shafter city limits?

Check the city's map, which shows the Shafter city limits in red. It matters because inside those limits the city issues the building permit, and if you're outside them, we check with the building office for your address before we start.
