About our Shafter concrete contractor crew

Shafter concrete work, learned by hand since 2013
I started out as a helper on a small crew, mixing, hauling and cleaning tools until they finally let me near a trowel. In 2013 I opened Shafter Concrete here in Shafter. Homeowners call us for driveways, patios and walks, the flat slabs we call flatwork, and builders call us for slabs and footings. Most of what we pour sits inside Shafter city limits or out toward Bakersfield, and the job is the same either way.
What I care about most is the ground under the concrete, the subgrade the slab sits on. Most bad slabs I've seen went wrong down there, not on top, usually because somebody raked the dirt level instead of digging it out and packing it. I'd rather spend the extra time on prep than explain a crack later. That's how we got known for flatwork that drains right and stays where we put it.

Values you'll notice on your concrete job
These are the things you'll actually see from us, from the first visit to the day the forms come off. None of them are slogans. They're how we keep a slab from cracking and sinking.
The person who quotes it is at the pour
I come out to look at every job and write the estimate myself. Our own crew does the work and I'm on the job with them, so nothing I told you gets lost between the quote and the pour.
Time spent on the ground first
We dig out soft dirt, pack the base and check where the water runs before any concrete shows up, because that's where most cracked and sunken concrete starts. If the budget gets tight, I'd trim the finish before the base, since a nice surface on bad ground still cracks.
Estimates you can compare line for line
Our written estimates say what's in and what isn't, so you can hold ours next to anyone else's. The price mostly moves with the size of the slab, how much base work your ground needs and the finish you pick, and the estimate is where you'll see your own number.
Licensing and permits for concrete work
California contractor license
In California, anyone who contracts for work that needs a building permit, or for work worth $1,000 or more in labor and materials combined, has to hold a current license from the Contractors State License Board. We're licensed and insured, so check that on anyone you hire.
City of Shafter business license and permits
Inside Shafter city limits, the city's Building Department issues building permits, lists patios and retaining walls among the jobs that need one, and asks for a City of Shafter business license number on the application. If your job needs a permit, we handle the application and line up the inspections, and if you're not sure, we check with the building office for your address before we start.
